There's a lake in Northern Norway that seems totally ordinary from the map. But from above, it becomes something else entirely. Aerial 360° photography has a way of finding beauty in places most people drive straight past. Takvatnet is one of those places.
The Tale of Takvatnet
Lying between Bardufoss, Nordkjosbotn, and Finnsnes, Takvatnet is not among the most visited corners of Norway. But it has a story worth knowing. In the early 20th century, heavy net fishing pushed the lake to the brink of becoming completely lifeless. Before World War II, an attempt was made to repopulate it with Arctic Char as food for trout. It backfired. The water became overpopulated, the trout nearly died out, and most of the remaining fish were riddled with parasites. The lake became useless as a fishing lake.
It took until 1989, with the help of UiT The Arctic University of Norway, for the lake and its wildlife to finally recover. Today UiT runs a research station at Takvatnet and continues to study it.
